Anatomy and details

1. Detailing the chest

1. Before I start sculpting I like to dot the center line, also I mark the collarbone and the neck muscles which connects with the collarbone.

2. The shoulders on the base are sloping downwards a little bit so I'm adding clay to make them more horizontal and anatomically correct.

3. When the shoulders are smoothened out, I'm adding more clay to the chest. This step is completely optional. Study your own sculpture and try to spot particular areas you need to improve.

4. From the side view it's visible that the chest is too hollow. Some extra clay will make it more natural.

5. Add a string of clay where the collarbone should be.

6. Smoothen out to the sides. If there's some inaccuracies left you'll be able to correct them in the sanding process.

7. Add two strings of clay where the neck muscles should be.

8. Smoothen out to the sides forming two raised muscles. Don't forget to connect them to the collarbone.

9. To form a bust add some clay below the collarbone.

10. Smoothen out gently dragging clay upwards.

11. To shape more realistic breasts I'm cutting off the excess clay to achieve a form similar to the water drop.

To better understand how the breast should look like you can apply this principle. As it is seen in the drawing, the breast can be divided into three areas: Upper (lit) area, the black line in the middle which is the highest point and the lower area in the shadow.

12. Finished chest.

13. Side view shows us that the breast form looks like a droplet with the lit area, highest point and the lower are in the shadow.

2. Detailing the belly

1. Now that the figure won't be looking so flat, I'm adding more clay to the belly area.

2. Smoothen out the clay and check if the figure looks better. If you want you can add a bellybutton too.

3. Detailing the back

1. Dot the center line, so it would be easier to follow the symmetry. Mark the shoulder blades.

2. Add clay to the marked areas and to the areas around the shoulder muscles. Muscles above the shoulder blades make the whole area look more even and the transition between the shoulder blades and the shoulders smooth.

3. Smoothen out the edges.

4. Mark the ribcage to add more dimension to the dolls back.

5. Add clay to the marked area.

6. Smoothen out and repeat previous steps to the other side.

7. To achieve more flattering figure I add some clay to the lower back area to lift the buttocks and add curves to the body.

8. Side view. The upper body is looking great so I leave it there.

4. Detailing the knees

1. Mark the main parts of the knee: flesh above quadriceps tendon, kneecap and ligaments beneath the kneecap.

2. Add clay to the marked areas.

3. Smoothen out the clay keeping all the three areas visible.

After you're finished sculpting, polish the whole body thoroughly. In the picture you can see my result. The doll is not attached to the stand just yet.
